At Hanakahi Farm, we are honored to uphold the legacy of generational agriculture, producing poi derived from the heritage of my great-grandmother, Lilian Hanakahi Lono DeRego Ohana, originating from Hana, Maui, and continuing in Nanakuli, Oahu, then finally home to Hawai'i Island, Hanakahi, Hilo. Our Native Hawaiian and Mayan family operates an organic farming venture dedicated to cultivating Kalo and other indigenous canoe crops, thereby honoring the contributions of our ancestors. Our Mayan heritage, originating from Veracruz, Mexico, grounds us. Camerino Torres Contreras, a farmer by birth, found his home in Hawai'i, as he is a Hawaiian Kingdom nationalist of Mexico. He has imparted invaluable knowledge to Hanakahi Farm, guiding us in cultivation and growth, drawing upon his rich Mayan cultural understanding. This wisdom unites our Native Hawaiian Ohana with our Kalo Roots, enabling us to produce poi directly from the 'Aina Farm to table, honoring the traditions of my Kukuna Tutu Wahine (great-grandmother).

HAWAI'I ISLAND GROWN KALO

KALO, also known as taro root, is a vital crop in agriculture, particularly in organic farming practices. It thrives in nutrient-rich soil and is often cultivated on family-run farms, ensuring sustainable growth. To nourish this crop, spring water is often used, contributing to its organic quality.

KALO, which refers to the taro root, and UALA, known as Okinawan sweet potato, are both integral to sustainable agriculture practices. These crops thrive in organic farming environments, and they rely on pure spring water for optimal growth.

Hawaiian ginger is cultivated on a farm in Umauma, located north of Hilo on the island of Hawai'i. This organic farming operation offers Fresh Harvest Ginger, including young ginger available for purchase.

Hawaii-grown turmeric (ʻōlena), cultivated through organic farming practices, offers potent health benefits due to its rich curcumin content. This powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant boosts immunity, aids digestion, supports liver health, improves brain function, and promotes skin health. Local varieties like Hawaiian Red provide concentrated curcumin and have traditional uses for healing and spiritual cleansing. The benefits of this remarkable crop are further enhanced by being grown in the nutrient-rich volcanic soils of the Hawai'i Island, showcasing the importance of sustainable agriculture in maximizing its health properties.
All Kalo is cultivated within the Kingdom of Hawai'i and POI are made in Las Vegas. Certain products are available on the Island of Hawai'i only. We are a No Spray, Non Gmo, & Non treated Farm Mahalo nui loa
